Reviewer: Allison Martin The Out-Of-Sync Child Has Fun: Activities for Kids With Sensory Integration
Dysfunction This book contains nearly 300 pages of activities, exercises, games and projects for children with various sensory integration needs. Touch, hearing, balance and movement, vision, body position and even the sense of smell are all addressed. Key occupational and physical therapy issues are included, such as fine motor, gross motor, crossing the middle line, and bilateral movement. Each chapter starts with a description of the sensory issue, and then deavles into a range of activites appropriate to work on that particular issue. Benefits and variations on a number of games are provided, along with detailed instructions and diagrams when appropriate. The variety of activities included in this book is amazing. For example, just a few of the activities suggested for proprioception include carrying, pushing or pulling heavy items such as pillowcases filled with stuffed animals, other children sitting on blankets, bathing the dog, having pillow fights, horesbackriding, and play walking like animals. This is a terrific resource for parents of children with a wide range of special needs. It can also be used for "normal" children who struggle from a difference in response to sensation in the environment than other children. Parents who wish to provide to their childlren a rich sensory diet, more difficult to do in thie less free and less active era of continual exposure to TV, videos and computer, will find this book inspiring.. |
