Reviewed by Allison Martin "Look Who's Adopted was written by an adoptive father to reassure his children's concerns about being adopted. Its central character is a turtle, named Wendel, adopted into a family of rabbits. Wendel learns about famous and remarkable people who have been adopted. Then he is presented with to a variety of jobs he may wish to have when he grows up. This book is introduces several ideas to preschoolers - 1) many people are adopted, including some who are famous people, and 2) although you may look different than your family you can still be very capable. "Look Who's Adopted is best for younger children as they begin to become familiar with the word adoption. There are plenty of opportunities to incorporate names of adoptees your child knows into the story. They will also enjoy their reflection in the mirror at the end of the book. However, it is less useful for older children, as it does not address the more central issues of adoption or racial differences. Although well intentioned, it might be confusing to imply that a child's past or appearance are not relevant or to equate being adopted with being from a different species. "Overall a cute book with a tone that is upbeat and enthusiastic about being adopted." |
