Reviewer: Allison Martin Orphans of the Living by Jennifer Toth is a heart tugging story of children trapped in poverty, dysfunctional families and the social welfare system in the United States. Jennifer Toth shares the personal stories of five older, impoverished children in foster care in California, North Carolina, and Illinois, over the course of several years. Their lives exemplify the inability of the social system in the United States to rectify the situation for children caught in the spiral of dysfunctional families and the maze of underfunded services. Jennifer Toth's compassionate portrayal results in a haunting book that is difficult to put down. I recommend the Orphans of the Living to anyone interested in adoption of older children - especially in the United States - or in adoption and foster care reform. |
