Reviewed by Allison Martin Let's Talk About It: Adoption by Fred Rogers is an absolutely wonderful book for young children about adoption. This book belongs in every school and home library. Fred Roger's sister was adopted when he was 11, and his depth of understanding and affection for children resonates throughout the book. Parents will remember Fred Rogers as the famous "Mr. Rogers" who presided over the children's television show for so many years with his soft spoken and gentle manner and his willingness to tackle childhood issues. The book starts off with a hospital setting as he describes that"you could belong in your family by being born into it, or you could belong in your family by being adopted into it." True to Mr. Rogers format, he tells children that it is okay to feel angry or sad, but constantly reassures the reader that children who are adopted truly belong in their family. Let's Talk About It: Adoption is illustrated with photographs of children and families of all races. The photos are a bit poised but this will not get in the way of the excellent and thoughtful writing, which all young children need to hear. |
