Reviewed by Allison Martin A mother asks each animal around the village to "hush" so her baby can sleep. She visits the lizard, frog, monkey and water-buffalo as they gather around the darkened village huts. Meanwhile her young child climbs out of his hammock and peaks curiously out to watch each one settle down for the night. Soft and comforting, earth tone illustrations of cut-paper-and-ink complement the sonorous lullaby phrases. The rhythmic and repetitious text, along with the soothing earth-tone illustrations, make this a wonderful book for bedtime reading. "Hush! Who's that creeping under the house? "MEWO MEWO," a lean black cat. Black cat, black cat - don't come creeping. Can't you see that Baby's sleeping?" |
