Review by Allison Martin When the Cradle is Empty by John and Sylvia Van Regenmorter provides support for couples coping with infertility, from a conservative Christian perspective. This broad takes a broad perspective on the issue of fertility; it addresses emotional aspects, coping with society, biblical reflections, and approaches to resolution. Topics include impact on your marriage, coping with holidays, and prayer. Quotes from others struggling with infertility are interspersed throughout the text. The authors recommend prayer, support from your pastor, and support groups for help in traveling this road, and provide practical suggestions for all of these. Infertility treatment options are covered in detail, with a religious perspective which treats life as starting with fertilization and dependant on heredity. Techniques discussed include intrauterine insemination, invitro-fertilization, and zygote and gamete intrafallopian tube transfer. Choosing not to have children and adoption are also discussed as two alternatives to continued fertility treatment. The authors are sympathetic to those who wish their children to be genetically related, and suggest adoption only for those who feel called to follow this path. Adoptive parents themselves they provide encouragement for those considering adoption, addressing issues such as open adoptions. This book is a useful resource for women who are in the throes of sorting
out the emotions created by infertility, or are investigating various
steps to take in their hopes for a family. |
