Review by Allison Martin You're Not My Real Mother! by Molly Friedrich, is a large format picture book for adopted children. While looking in a mirror, a little African American girl notices that she looks different from her blond mother. "You know, Mom, you're not my real mother." she says. Her mother replies that of course she is her real mother. She recalls the many happy times they have spent together - chopping food for dinner, retrieving her lost stuffed animal, learning to count. She then talks a bit about the birth mother of her child, explaining that is why they look different from each other. In response, the little girl recounts the many happy times they spent together - at the beach, on the trampoline, and at bedtime with her real mother. This is a sweet and reassuring book, simple enough for young children
to understand. It is warmly illustrated with soft, colorful illustrations.
Adoptive families will find it supportive in responding to the too oft
used phrase "real mother" and in answering their children's
questions about adoptive families." |
